The renewAfrica Initiative was launched in Rome in June 2019, and RES4Africa Foundation has been entrusted with carrying out the duties of its interim secretariat. The aim of the initiative is to promote and support the creation of a new European programme that enhances existing best practices to promote the deployment of renewable energy in Africa. As an industry-backed initiative, it counts the endorsement of 25 organisations ranging from the world of finance, IPPs, manufacturers, academia and consulting, to represent the entire European renewable energy value chain. This multi-stakeholder approach is both a distinguishing feature and a point of strength for the initiative that has the creation of a one-stop-shop to enhance European investment in African renewable energy projects as its main outcome.
In just eight months the initiative has gained much traction at the European level. The vast majority of the supporting organisations were not RES4Africa members, and are now joining the foundation in light of the recent positive collaboration.
“We are happy to introduce this membership category, which indicates the strong and positive working collaboration established in these months” states Antonio Cammisecra, President of RES4Africa Foundation, “Thanks to the joining of EDPR, Nordex Group and Vestas, the renewAfrica Initiative is now even better positioned to build a stronger, more complete support programme and ultimately kick-off renewable energy investments in Africa. I welcome our new members and look forward to work together to turn renewAfrica into reality”.
“At EDP Renewables, we are immensely proud of all the initiatives we have fostered to drive the investment and development of renewable energy in developing countries” explains Duarte Bello, COO Europe & Brazil of EDP Renewables, “renewAfrica is an important initiative that not only opens the door to growth across the continent, but also offers us opportunities to build ties with African nations”.
“We are glad to partner with renewAfrica in order to cooperate with industry peers, as well as financial institutions, to help raise the renewable potential for Africa” adds José Luis Blanco, CEO of the Nordex Group, “renewAfrica is a unique approach to a joint industry effort which provides industry expertise for the public sector on renewable energy in Africa”.
“With almost 2 GW installed or under construction in Africa, Vestas has been a true pioneer in the expansion of wind energy across the continent. Our company’s goal is to contribute to the planet’s sustainable development, so we are very proud of joining the RES4Africa Foundation. The proliferation of renewable projects in Africa over the next years will be key for the future of the continent. While fighting climate change, renewables will also allow African economies to reduce their dependency on energy imports and their exposure to fuel prices fluctuations” concludes Pedro Huarte-Mendicoa, Vestas’ Head of Public Affairs for Africa and the Mediterranean.
