The 9th edition of the Micro-Grid Academy was held from 20th-24th January 2020, in Nairobi, Kenya at the KPLC Institute of Energy Studies and Research (IESR) - Ruaraka. The training course focused on mini-grids through the execution of the first module of the new curriculum developed in collaboration with Strathmore University. 60 participants from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Italy were selected to be part of the training.
On-field training on PV technologies and site visit was done at the Talek mini-grid in Narok County. Participants had a chance to interview the community in Talek as a way to integrate the class topics on community engagement and productive power for rural communities.
The opening remarks saw the participation of Dr. Jeremiah Kiplagat, Director of the IESR, Prof. Izael Pereira Da Silva, Deputy Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation at Strathmore University, Prof. Andrea Micangeli and Fred Ishugah, Sustainable Energy Expert at the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency. The speakers highlighted the need to contribute to the enhancement of access to energy in the developing communities to foster local enterprise and create jobs. Therefore, knowledge acquisition remains key to ensuring that we can accelerate adoption of renewable energy.
